Chingiz Abassov is contemporary artist representing Azerbaijan art. Although he works predominantly outside Azerbaijan, in Europe and the USA, his works demonstrate his strong connection to his cultural roots. Despite displaying a wide range of artistic genres, from figurative to cityscape to portraiture, Abassov’s style is instantly recognizable through the bold brushwork and a unique combination of the expressive, colorful approach of the Azerbaijan school of painting and the traditions of Western realism.
A native of Baku born in 1963, Abassov showed an interest in drawing and painting in his early childhood. At age six he attended drawing and painting classes at the Palace for Youth in Baku. Nine years later he started his formal education at the Azimzade Art College in Baku where he spent four years studying drawing, painting, and composition. After serving in the army, he entered the famous Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, formerly known as the Vera Mukhina School of Higher Art and Design, studying Monumental Arts, including Italian fresco, sgraffito, and mosaic techniques. Following his graduation in 1989 with a Master in Fine Arts, Abassov worked in Baku at the state art plant on commissioned mosaics and murals and participated in national youth art exhibitions. During this period he also worked on several books in his capacity as an illustrator for the state publishing house.
From the early 90s the artist began exhibiting his work extensively in Europe starting with Finland. In 1992 he went to the USA and showed his work through a gallery in Laguna Beach, California. During this period he also worked on a variety of projects, including mural paintings in Lompoc, California, and created works, commissioned by the Los Angeles-based Duell Corporation, for a theme park.
Since the 90s Abassov has held numerous personal exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions worldwide, such as the Gabala International Art Exhibition in Azerbaijan, the Artexpo in New York, and the Florence Biennale in Italy.
Chingiz Abassov is the author of copious private and public commissions. The artist’s works are found in many private and public collections throughout world, including those of the head of state in Finland and the museum collection of Reinhold Würth.
